Any scuba diving experts out there? |
Hey folks, I'll be based in Montego Bay, Jamaica for ten days and I'm anctious to learn to scuba dive. Any tips? 2 recommendations. I recommend you go with the first 1) with PADI-take classes where you are now at a local dive shop and then have your records which you can transfer down to Jamaica - then you can get your open water dives certified in Jamaica and voila - you are certified up to 60 feet to dive without an instructor. Strongly recommend a mask snorkel and fins to be bought on your own for proper fit. 2) if you just want to dive while on vacation in Jamaica - you can take a resort course - where you learn to dive and start diving the same day - but it's only up to 30 feet depths and you have to dive with an instructor. Either one will get you what you need but the first will allow you to dive with a buddy on your own and you can use it world wide. Source(s): PADI divemaster in Ireland - was certified in the Caribbean. no First thing is that you'll need to get PADI's open water dive manual. You can find it at any local dive shop. Read it before you take the class. As far as having your own equipment, get your own mask and snorkel. You won't want to rent/borrow that, because everyone's face is shaped different and you'll want one that fits you just right. Other than that, just be sure to follow your dive instructor's instructions and ask about anything that you're unsure of before you get into the water. Scuba is a safe and very enjoyable sport as long as you know what you are doing. Jamaica is beautiful. You'll have a great time. Enjoy! Email a dive center near to where you are going and find out prices. Allow around 4 days for a basic PADI open water course. If you have any preexisting medical conditions you'll need medical clearance before diving. Check out http://www.padi.com/english/common/cours... . If you answer yes to any of the questions, get a doctor to check you out or inform the dive center. They should be able to help. If they say 'don't worry about it' find another dive center.
