A friend and I want to go surfing in the next few days. This would be our first time surfing (my friend can skateboard and I can skateboad+snowboard). Now two days ago I went with another friend to San Onofre (dog patch) to go swimming. My friend and I went a little deep and when we wanted to swim back in he struggled, kept getting pulled out further, swallowing water. Luckily a surfer was there to offer him a board to hold. I am a very good swimmer so I just swam back in easily. Now this friend knows how to tread water and is more fit (though im lil less fit and i can swim better) than the friend im going surfing with. I am concerned about my friend that is going swimming with me because I've known him for a long time since 4th grade and he does not swim very well at all. Are there any places that have surfer waves but easier to swim? I know he has a board but he really is not that good at swimming. Are there any tips you can give me to help him out if he starts having trouble? Thanks
Newport beach would be your best bet. most orange county beaches only allow surfing in the morning due to the fact that the hard boards and visiting tourists don't mix well. this sight has some info on beaches, there's probably some that are more informative out there though.
