No iron in water, but pool is still brown!?

We just opened our above ground 18x33 pool. I had the water tested, and found we have very little iron(even though it is well water). I put in the alkaline and chlorine that it needed. Also added algecide and boom! Water turned brown! Pool store said that is the dead algae and gave me some water sparkler stuff to put in and said to run the filter again for a day. I'm looking and it's still not much cleaner. I haven't vaccuumed yet, because I'm afraid I'll vaccuum up all the stuff I just put in.Help!! We want to swim before the season is over!!

Very little iron eh? Did the pool store give you a print out of your water chemistry? If so can you post it or send it to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com

"Very little", especially with well water, means more than enough to brown your water out. Pick up a metal remover or metal lock chemical from the pool store or WalMart and add in half again as much as recommended for the pool. Let this circulate through the pool for at least 24 hours.

Bacterial iron is a common problem in well water these days. It used to be isolated to a few areas of the states but has spread considerably over the last few years. Bacterial iron will barely show on the metals tests in a pool because it's locked inside the bacteria. Once these die off they drop tremendous amounts of iron into the water that can remain suspended until you add different chemicals which then drop it from the water as oxides... brown water. Try adding a flocculant - it will settle all the dead algae to the bottom where you can vac it up.
Hey there:

I've just run into the same problem. Sorry, but you are going to have to vacuum up all of the stuff that you just put in anyway. You must vacuum on either backwash or drain because the brown algae just goes back into the pool and you are simply frustrating yourself. Wish that I had remembered that from a few years ago......... really drives ya nuts when you've had a pool for over 25 years.

Good luck!
