I can swim the breast stroke BUT i don't know how to tread water. Any tips on how to tread water?

I can swim laps and fortunately the pool is only 5 feet so if i get tired i can still reach the floor and stand. BUT what if it was 6 feet deep? or what if i'm in the beach and the waters 12 feet? I try to do some "bicycling motion" when i tread but i always sink so my legs are pulled down.

i wave my arms underwater like i was trying to fly and i slowly kick my legs front to back. it sounds weird but no one can see your arms or legs underwater
I was always taught to make a figure eight motion with your hands palms down, and then just a pretty basic flutter kick. Hasn't failed me yet.
Fill you lungs air and kick your arms and feet like MAD!!!
kick your legs
Yes, easy steps. First start with deep relaxed breathing. Then hold your breath and start to lean back gently with your arms streched out in the water. Your body should naturally and easily start to float. Don't hold your breath the entire time! So now breathe regularly still tilting back and your feet will start to sink first. As you start to sink slightly, try a gentle sweeping scissors style kick. I also learned this as a kid with empty platic coke bottles under my armpits. Then went to holding one bottle with both hands.
The most important part is deep relaxed breathing, leaning back slightly, and then a gentle scissors kick. Also ,your head does not have to be completely out of the water- use the water like a pillow for your head.

Good luck
The first and most important tip is just to relax! The more you dense up the easier you sink.

With your arms try this: Hold them out straight out in front of you (in the water, but it's good to practice on land) with your thumbs down. Now slowly move your straight arms outward with your thumb still down. Once your arms get out wide, turn your thumbs upward and bring your arms in again. Think of it as a motion you would do if you were sitting on the beach and you wanted to spread the sand around.

With your legs, an easy breast stroke kick is the best way to learn to tread. Flutter kick will tire you out really quickly. The most efficient kick is the egg-beater kick where you rotate each leg in an opposite circular direction under the water. It's THE method of kicking for synchro swimmers, but is a bit advanced so you may want to save that for later.

Now combine the arms with the legs and relax. Try to lean a little forward or backwards in the water to create more surface area which will increase your buoyancy.
