How much clorine is needed to a 18' x 48" pool?

Just got one of those ez set up pools and I need to add clorine I am sure....also what keeps the water clear besides the filter?

Both of you, feel free to email me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to help you guys keep your pool crystal clear, sanitary, and healthy for the rest of the season without relying on the pool store expensive chemicals. The chemicals I recommend for use are the exact same as the pool store ones only in cheaper and purer form that you can pick up at WalMart, your grocery store, a hardware store, etc.

Take a sample of water to your local pool store and have them test for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates

Bring the results back and post them here or email them to me and I'll be happy to walk you through the care and maintenance of your pool.

The one thing you will want to purchase is a test kit. Don't rely on the testing strips as they are inaccurate at best and completely wrong at worst. So investing in a test kit is a good idea. Make sure it can test for free chlorine as well as total chlorine before purchasing it as there is a difference in these two and you need to know what the readings of both are on an almost daily basis.

*EDIT*
To address the filter thing above.... you don't have to replace the filter. Just purchase a two pack for the season, rinse the dirty one under hose pressure with a spray nozzle, soak in a 5 gallon bucket of water with a quarter cup of household bleach overnight, let dry in the sun the next day and you can rotate cartridges like this for the entire season without having to buy new ones. In fact you may get three seasons out of them with proper care like this.

The pool store is there to make money by selling chemicals, so keep that in mind when following any advice from them or any pool company you contact for help. We just bought that same pool at Wal-mart last week. We were totally clueless as to what chemicals we needed to use in it (and Wal-mart staff had no clue either!). I ended up calling a pool place in our area and the guy said to use chlorine tablets. He said you need to shock it at least once a week. He told us to use 3-4 chlorine tablets at a time (and we got the 3'' ones! If I were you I'd call a pool place in your area or better yet, buy your chemicals from them so they can tell you exactly what you need to buy while you're there! I hope you enjoy your pool! We've been in it everyday since we got it and that was a week or so ago!!! =) Oh yea, as for the filter, they suggested we change the filter once every two weeks but we left the cover off of the pool two nights in a row (hoping the water would warm up faster) and there were so many bugs in it ( we live out in the country) so the filter was dirty after just one week!!!
