What do i need to treat an above ground pool when it is first filled with water?

My pool is 4 feet high by 15 feet in diameter. what would be the proper amount of chlorine and what would be the best way to put it in the pool (liquid, tablet).

Both answers below are good, but neither really addressed the rest of the water chemistry. You need to have a balance of chemistry in the water to keep it clear and healthy and chlorine is only one part of it. This may seem daunting but once it's balanced it rarely comes out of balance and requires only weekly maintenance for this. Chlorine and pH needs to be checked daily and maintained but the rest of the levels really only need a once per week test to ensure they haven't changed and make minor adjustments to them if they have.

Feel free to drop me a line at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to create a tailored maintenance schedule for your pool.

Please take a water sample to your local pool store and have them test for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates

Include these results as well as the gallon size of the pool, filtration system type, chemicals you have on hand (ingredients are best but name brands work too), and anything you've added to the pool in the last two weeks. you need to get a kit to test your water for the chemicals to balance out. they are sold at any pool store. the chlorine tablets in a floater is best for the above ground pools since they receive sun on the top and sides. with the floater it will continuously release the chlorine and keep your pool treated better. you will find buying the pool is nothing compared to buying the chemicals. try to keep up with it, because once it gets bad and you have to shock it with lots of chemicals that can be frustrating and very expensive. try swimming at night, as the temp goes down outside the water temp goes up. you can also purchase a solar cover that will help heat the pool and keep night wind from blowing too much stuff into it.
It is best to purchase an inline chlorine feeder which mounts directly after the filter and directly before the water return back into the pool. You load it up with chlorine tabs or sticks and it automatically feeds the chlorine into the pool via the return line. The chlorine being admitted depends on the position of a dial on the outside of the feeder body which you can adjust.
But chlorine alone will not keep your water clear. I recommend taking a water sample to a reputable pool store and have them test it for total alkalinity and pH. Also, make sure you buy a good test kit so you can check these variables on your own. If you are first starting up, the first thing to check is the total alkalinity and once that is in the acceptable range (80 to 120), then you can get your pH set in the correct range which is 7.2 to 7.6. Finally start adding your chlorine.
