Does anyone know why titanic sunk? |
Does anyone know why titanic sunk? The Titanic was a very safe ship for its day. Even now it would be considered an extremely safe ocean going vessel. Its hull was seperated by fifteen transverse bulkheads which were sealed by watertight doors. Unfortunately those in charge of the vessel were foolish and vain, believing the ship to be "unsinkable". It was sailed towards seventy five mile long ice floes at near full speed - a remarkably stupid thing to do. As the effect of very cold water on the ships hull were not properly recognised at the time this may have been a contributing factor to the speed at which the Titanic sailed towards ice floes, field ice and icebergs. Also, most of the ships binoculars had been left behind at Southampton. Therefore when Frederick Fleet (lookout) saw the approaching iceberg he had limited time to warn the crew on the bridge. The action they took was to reverse engines and steer hard to starboard (left). Obviously a ship of this size does not turn very quickly and the iceberg hit the port side bursting hull plates through the forepart of the ship and breeching six of the transverse bulkheads. Titanic was designed to stay afloat with five of these bulkheads breeched and so the ship rapidly sank taking 1500 people down with her. An immense tragedy caused by sheer arrogance and misplaced belief in technology. ice berg It sank because the rivets on the side of the ship were made with poor quality metals and these popped off when she scraped the iceberg...This is a fact by the way ! iceburg mmmmmmm GOOD QUESTION...Contrary to popular belief, history reported events wrong. The ship was full of affluent, wealthy, individuals. The orders were sent to sink the ship, to rid our isles of these evil grabbers. Titantic sank? Man I need to keep up with current affairs a whole lot more. She struck an iceberg. |
