How much sand is needed for a 12' by 42" above ground swimming pool?

Is this a hard sided pool or soft sided Easy Set type? This will make a difference in how much sand you need.

The surface area of the hard sided pool is 113.04 sq ft. You will need a sand bed 2-4" deep underneath this.

113sq ft * 12 = 1356sq in
1356sq in * (2 and then 4 for depth of sand) = 2712cu in and 5424cu in
2711cu in / 12 = 226cu ft of sand
5424cu in / 12 = 452cu ft of sand

*EDIT*
The above calculations are based on a hard sided pool :-) Source(s): Registered CPO (Certified Pool Operator) with the National Swimming Pool Federation and maintaining public access swimming pools for many years now.
