Why does it take longer to swim a mile than it does to walk a mile? |
I can walk/jog a mile in 14 minutes, but it take me 30-40 minutes to swim a mile? Why is this? I think it has to do with the resistance of the water as I do the crawl stroke. You are walking every day from one place to another. You onely swim for some time and I don't think every day. If you would give up walking and swim from place to place, you're body would start to adapt and you would be able to swim faster than you can walk. Big fish can reach speeds faster than that you can run but, like I said they do it every day. I'd agree with your theory on resistance. Water provides significantly more resistance then air. water is thicker than air.. more resistance, you answered your own question We have been walking all of our lives, everyday. Therefore, our leg muscles are more developed than our arm muscles. Reasonably, we can walk faster than we swim. I agree with your theory. Water would be a constant resistance while walking, you might get a little wind, it would not equal the resistance of the water. when you use your legs you go fast but when you swim you use your arms. On your arms you have less muscle but when you use your legs you have more muscles Thats my answer for now Bye |
