How long might it take an average swimmer to swim 1/2 mile (750 yards)?

I am training for a triathlon and I am curious how long itmight take me to swim 1/2 mile. I am not a very good swimmer, jsut below average.

I've completed 3 sprint triathlons (all pool swims) and consider myself a below average swimmer.

I average about 2 minutes 20 seconds per 100m in training, but in races it has fluctuated in the races due to differing factors such adrenaline, excitement and fatigue

It will all depend on whether it is a pool swim with ends you can kick off or open water with currents, drift and many swimmers around you (plus the benefit of your wetsuit)

It might be a good idea to check the online results of the racesyou are thinking of entering to see the times of previous years

Somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes should put you in the pack

Good luck with your training and your races
Well, if you are swimming in open water, in a triathalon for example, it will take longer to swim the distance due to current and winds but lets say you swim and can hold 2 minutes per hundred, not a very fast 100, you could swim in about 15-20 mins. Distance swimmers can swim it in under 7 and a half mins (1 minute per 100) but for an avg swimmer I'd say about 15-20 mins, especially if you are doing a triathalon.
Im not too sure...im an average swimmer and regularly swim 500 meters (about 520 yards) and it usually takes me about 10-15 minutes. but ive never timed myself, just going by feel. id say it would take about 20, maybe 25 mins. thats kind of far by the way, i'd train my butt off if i were you. congrats on the triathlon, thats quite an accomplishment!
well i would say 20 minutes for an average swimmer .......well i do triathlon and i do it in 11 but I'm a really good swimmer ........well it depends if u swim in a pool or in a lake or ocean ........it's easier if the pool is small or if there is no waves ........i hope u will understand my English loll
im a coach.........
Alot of factors will affect your race pace including your age, conditions, currents, water temp, training and nerves. Will you be in open water? Will you wear a wetsuit? Will you swim freestyle?

On average, in open water, wetsuit legal, the 750 free should take between 10:00 to 15:00. Wave size, age, currents and other factors should be taken into consideration.

During your training you should swim at least twice that distance, timed, in order to guage your race pace. Make sure if you are racing in open water that you train in open water at least twice if not every single time. Make sure you learn to pace yourself and sight in open water if need be.

Also, check out prior results from the race you'll be competing in. By finding the age-group results from the race you'll be able to guage your own pace against that of the other competitors and this is always helpful.

Good luck!!!
