Butterfly Stroke?

I am an excellent swimmer, but I have trouble with this stroke. I can do it, but I feel awkward. It is the hardest stroke for me. Practice will make me feel more comfortable, but I wondered if anyone else feels this way. How did you improve your form?

Butterfly was the hardest stroke for me too. When I joined the swim team at my school my coach gave us alot of tricks to help improve. First for those who have never done it before she made us hang onto a pole and then she dragged us through the water dunking us in and out so that we knew the movements in the water. She would give us drills where we would use a board and just practice our kick, first big and slow and then small and fast. Then with a pull buoy we'd practice our arms. Practicing them separatley is a lot easier and will help you once you start putting them together. Once you put them together it's hard but you get used to it. Remember that it's like you're a mermaid and doing a wave throughout your entire body. First your head then your shoulders, stomach, hips, than legs. There's only supposed to be two kicks per stroke and at first don't force them. Just let the kicks come naturally because if you're doing the wave motion with your body the kicks will just happen. Another thing you can practice is doing the dolphin in the shallow end where you dive down to the bottom then come back out and then dive back down. My coach told us that it help with our form. Good luck and remember to warm up before you start ^^
i swam a thousand years ago- ( well 30 really). Butterfly is very difficult. I suggest you have someone film you while you swim and watch your stroke technique. My coach was always ragging on me because I would "hydroplane"- Front out of the water too long-

I finally found a strange, dolphin like rhythm that allowed me to move more smoothly and swim faster. I'm sure there are some great video feeds of the perfect stroke that you could study. Without anyone here actually seeing you swim, we are all guessing what you personally need to do different.

Chlorine Heads Rules!!!!
Yes i totoally agree butterfly is the most unnatural storke out of all of them To practice do dolphin dives in a pool, while in the water dive head first do the butterfly kick and as soon as you hit the water and arch ur back and keep on repeating to help alot, the stroke is the easiest part of butterfly during the stroke remember hit the water with your pinky then cup ur hand under the water and pull as much water as u can then have ur pinky leave the water first flick your wrists and reapeat so remember...pinky in and pinky out
I do I feel all weird and I always feel like I am doing the chicken all the time my friends say Im not but I have no answer yet tell me when you get the anser
ok i am a great swimmer to and i think about this all the time and my favorite stroke is butterfly (just made state) but i just fixed that stroke by getting my arms out of the water more and dolphin kicking 2 times 1 big 1 little kick!!!!
