Why fast court specialist tennis players are disappearing?? |
Why fast court specialist tennis players are disappearing?? I think these play styles actually come in cycles. We'll probably see a resurgence in serve/volley type play in the future once everyone is bored with just slow baseline rally play. Touch tennis was big until Borg introduced a power baseline game. Then McEnroe brought back touch tennis, then Lendl ushered in more baseline play, then Edberg & Pete brought back the serve and volley, then Agassi reinvigorated the baseline game, etc. etc. You get the idea. Someone will come along and dominate again with a different play style and change things. Dunno but it coincides with the decline in American tennis (male and female). More couch potatoes these days. i think the nature of equipment available plays a huge role in the kind of players who dominate world tennis... tennis balls used these days are slower and bounce more than ones used 10-12 yrs back. also, lots of players have grown up on lighter, more powerful rackets which give amazing control and power from baseline... again, use of strings like luxilon, which give so much control and allows you to play amazing angles on your shots with good topsin has tipped the balance in favour of slow court players and baseliners, which has probably made the serve and volley and all court players loose their edge.. easier on the legs and ankles. technology advancement produces much better equipments than 10 years ago....rackets nowaday are powerfull and extreme lighter than then....beside, players themselves are in great physically shape....they are faster and stronger than ever before.....serve and volley just simply wont work these day because the serve returns come back so fast, the volleyer just simply has no time to get to the net.... |
