In the game of soccer, how do you defeat a moving triangle offense? |
What sort of individual or collective scheme would you instruct players to counter this move? Play either a 3-5-2 or a diamond defense. In a 3-5-2, have 2 defensive mids that mark the point of the triangle and the ball (depending on who's nearer). Two wing defenders mark the other two points of the triangle. Note wing mids must track other teams' wing mids all the way to the endline if need be for this to work. In a 4-4-2, one central defender marks the point of the triangle. Wing defenders mark the other two points. 4th defender acts as sweeper. Again, wing mids must mark well. Final option 4-4-2. central defender takes one point. defensive mid takes one point, wing defender nearest other point marks that point of the triangle. Leaves back side defender and one central to clean up messes. In my experience, third option is best. Flat defense moving forward to put the point of the triangle offside, while using a sweeper to cover the point striker. The idea of the triangle (as I understand it is sort of to flood a depth and feed the ball up to get a 3 on 2 situation. Cover the striker with the sweep and push the line up. This is used in basketball and hockey, too. The idea is to use short quick passes while flooding a zone...so take away the zone by playing man with the sweep and one other defender, and use offsides to your advantage. Short quick passes require a lot of concentration and someone will go over. Over the top mentality! If they are stuck in a set pattern, punt it over them. Not pretty to watch, but it gets results! My mate has just won through to the play-offs in senior football league. Unfortunately he is very happily married to a typical "footballers wife" or I would introduce you! Good Luck. KC UK In a 4-4-2, one central defender marks the point of the triangle. Wing defenders mark the other two points. 4th defender acts as sweeper. Again, wing mids must mark well. 5 - 3 -2 |
