Here are some British pioneers who may interest you:
NETTIE HONEYBALL (honest!) recruited enough players to form two squads in London in 1894. Five thousand people saw the British Ladies Football Club play a match in Bury (northwest England), eight thousand in Newcastle. The club folded the next year when the novelty of women's football wore off.

ALICE KELLwas the captain of a team that formed in 1914 at an engineering company--Dick, Kerr--in Preston (near Liverpool). She had a hat-trick in a match at Everton watched by 53,000 people in 1920.
LILY PARR joined the Dick Kerr Ladies that year, at age 14, and became its star player--for over 30 years. Missed five games, scored 967 goals.
CARMEN POMIES was a French player and champion javelin thrower who joined Dick Kerr.
Center-forward FLORRIE REDFORD was the leading scorer (or"artilheira," as Brazil's MARTA would say) when the team toured the eastern U.S. in 1923. She, Lily, FLORRIE HASLAM, and MOLLY WALKER challenged the U.S. women's running team to a relay race--and won.
The Dick Kerr Ladies raised scores of thousands of pounds (the equivilant of a few millions today) for war- and strike-relief.

JULIE FOUDY was my favorite player for the U.S.

The site below has a lot more information, and photos about the pioneers.
