want to wish all muslims a ramadan kareem.. i note also that its the days of slihot for us middle eastern jews..
entree: read this.. now the kids in the pic in the article are kids from my neighbourhood that i know.. the one with the longer hair lives just up the road - i see him often.. his board broke last year and someone hooked him up with a new one.. awesome kid..
main course: i was surfing the maldives during the ten days preceding the death of my aunt and ramadan entered full swing.. we met a lot of people in the streets of the islands.. good muslims with good hearts who welcomed us with warm conversation knowing good and well that we were israeli..

the call of the muazin rang beautifully through the crisp ocean air.. it was melodic and gentle but heart felt.. we took care not to eat as we walked through the streets of the islands.. we didnt drink outside and kept as discreet as we could.. they delighted in our admiration of their waves.. and their waves captured the essence of our surfer souls..
those islands were full of good people.. i have so many stories that i shall soon tell..
desert: as we mourn the loss of my aunt we have been praying every night.. led by a rabbi that my mother arranged we have been more than satisfying the requirements of a minyan.. i often fail to comply with tradition opting instead for my own views of what my culture means - but i admit that at these times the prayers loosened hearts in the house and i believe that they have brought comfort to the soul of my aunt..
i encourage all people to take these days to reflect on their year and seek forgiveness from those they have hurt - whether or not they trust in the justice of their actions.. may these be days of reconciliation and healing for all..
