  • Glossy Talk

So last week OK! magazine ran a 2/3 page shot of Suri Cruise sporting smudged lipstick on her face along with this caption: "Seems like make-up has now been added to little Suri Cruise's reported $2 million designer wardrobe. During a stroll through the streets of Boston with mum Katie Holmes the fashionable three-year-old tot was happy to ham it up for the cameras with lipstick on her er lips. Well at least she was ready for her close-up!"

I was prepared to overlook that because the magazine was having a birthday. But this is a whole different kettle of fish. Because this week Suri has made her cover debut looking every bit the mini celebutante with her coffee cup (filled with flavoured milk?) and sparkly silver shoes and frilly pink dress. Not on the cover of Total Girl mind you but on OK!.

We have been here before (see Tiny Tots High Heels). And yet here we are again. But worse. Perhaps I am overreacting but this obsession with Suri makes me feel ill. It was one thing for the glossies to obsess over Nicole Richie when she had the body of a 13-year-old but quite another to covet the life and wardrobe of a three-year-old... and put one on the cover of a women's magazine.

In her editor's letter Claire Isaac writes: "There are a few people in the world who I'd like to trade places with for a little while... At the top of my list right now though is Suri Cruise – that kid just seems to have the best life. Endless supply of cupcakes? Check! Designer shoes? Check! Read more about her fascinating and enviable wardrobe on page 20 [pictured right] and about her mum and dad's more serious discussions over her future on page 18."

Of course Suri is undeniably cute. She also provides the glossies and their readers with a platform for talking about issues around raising children – the cover story centres around the issue of Katie's will to enroll Suri in Catholic school and Tom's desire for her to be "schooled in the teachings of Scientology". Also a big part of the problem here is her parents' willingness to parade their photogenic daughter about town for the paparazzi to stake out like a pack of pig-hunting dogs providing th7f6e glossies with loads of photographic ammunition.

Earlier this week Britt @ Fashionista had this to say about Kate Hudson accessorising with her five-year-old son Ryder for a Harper's BAZAAR shoot: "The kid looks adorable but it’s jarring to see him voluntarily put in front of the camera when so many people - famous people - complain about media attention toward their children. It’s something we touched on last year when Natalia Vodianova dragged her entire clan into the pages of Vogue and something we thought about again when Angela Lindvall posed with her kids in British Vogue and then gave her son a starring role in her Gap ad. Is it okay because it’s a controlled environment unlike the paparazzi on the sidewalk? Because they’re still kids either way and they’re not the ones choosing to model. Their parents just happen to be really really pretty. Are we nuts? Or would you too prefer your fashion editorials without a side of child?"

Equally would you prefer your gossip magazines – particularly their covers – to feature more adult less toddler?

    Yours truly
